Like a lot of swing dances, Blues dance evolved from African rhythms and movements. It is a family of dances that grew out of blues and jazz music. Blues dancing, however, was never widely practiced as a social or performance dance; it developed in smoky juke joints and at blues house parties, giving it a more intimate feel.

Modern blues dance is all about interpreting and expressing the music and focusing on the connection between partners rather than memorized patterns and/or choreography.
